|Peter Boettke|
My book on Hayek was published last September. Since that time I have presented the book at several colleges and universities, and did multiple podcasts. I am going to provide links to those here so readers can track them down easily. I still would love to do one with Russ Roberts at EconTalk, as I think we could have a great conversation on Hayek. That is a hint for those who know Russ to write to him :)
My new book (with Paul Aligica and Vlad Tarko) titled Public Governance and the Classical Liberal Perspective will be available in June, so I am available to talk about that book as well. In fact, last week was interesting because I spoke about Hayek book at Loyola University on Wed, but then the Public Governance book on Friday at Indiana University.
Here are the podcasts in chronological order.
The Economic Rockstar -- September 1, 2018
The Economic Detective -- September 1, 2018
The Remnant -- September 6, 2018
Cato Daily Podcast -- September 19, 2018
Reason Podcast -- October 12, 2018
Ceterus Never Paribus -- February 8, 2019
Centre for Study of Governance & Society podcast -- March 4, 2019
There have been some reviews as well that have been published. Rafe Champion's review in the Quadrant, Erik Matson's review in University Bookman and Anne Bradley's review in Modern Age. There will be others coming out that I know about, some critical. I wrote the book with a specific purpose in mind and it was not meant to please everyone, but for those who read the preface where I am very specific about what I am up to, they tend to understand what I was up to and why the book took the shape it did. I am in some of the podcasts very explicit about what I think are shortcomings of my approach and legitimate criticisms of my book. Anyway, here are the endorsements of the book that can be found in the book.
“An intellectual historian discussing an eminent figure in social theory must not only be sensitive to the subtle nuances of that theorist’s own contributions, he must be able to relate those nuances to the complex, shifting intellectual fashions against which that theorist was rebelling. Peter Boettke’s skillful treatment of Hayek’s intellectual journey brilliantly and provocatively succeeds in achieving this standard of excellence. This is a book that will be recognized as pathbreakingly important for many decades to come.” (Israel M. Kirzner, New York University, USA )
“Among mid-twentieth century economists, only Hayek’s work enabled us to understand what I found truly astonishing. People in my market experiments quickly discovered the efficient equilibrium outcomes hidden in their dispersed knowledge of individual item values that I had assigned them privately. For Hayek, prices convey the coordinating information that incentivizes performance by harnessing dispersed knowledge like no other known system. Boettke brings this towering intellect into your own thinking. Hayek’s deep insights extend far beyond economics and into jurisprudence, social and political philosophy. Read Boettke’s Hayek and soar.” (Vernon L. Smith, Nobel Laureate Chapman University, USA)
“Boettke advocates a humane and cosmopolitan liberalism as an antidote to the nationalist and populist enthusiasms so evident today on the left and the right. Hayek fought the same battles, of course, against similar foes. Boettke deftly brings Hayek’s main contributions in the areas of economics, political economy, and social philosophy into conversation with current concerns and recent writers. On the way he corrects some egregious misreadings. It is a fine achievement.” (Bruce Caldwell, Duke University, USA)
