In public relations they say people make decisions emotionally and afterward look for facts and reason to support that decision. I think Jonathan Haidt's "Righteous Mind" backs that up. Also, Helmut Schoeck shows how envy organizes societies. You can't counter envy with reason.

Providing the economic facts and reason is important, but we need to pay more attention to the emotional if we want to change peoples' minds.
