How We Came Back: Voices from Post-Katrina New Orleans is now published. Congratulations to Nona Martin Storr, Emily Chamlee Wright and Virgil Henry Storr for their hard work and dedication to listening and learning from those on-the-ground.
In my foreword to the book I write the following:
“How We Came Back is a testament to the resiliency and power of a self-governing citizenry and the trials and tribulations they endure in dealing with the ‘cares of thinking and all the troubles of living,’ as Tocqueville put it. Its stories offer a fascinating window into the self-governing capacity of a people and the truly democratic way of life, even in the aftermath of horrific devastation.”
This book should be on your "must read" list for this summer, especially as we lead up to the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the devastation it wrought, and more importantly how individuals reconstituted their lives and their communities in the aftermath, and what policies impeded that process and what policies enabled that process. There are so many lessons to learn about self-governing democracy if you are just willing to listen to those who must live the experience.
