The Society for the Development of Austrian Economics is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 Carl Menger Essay Contest for undergraduate students. Jeremy Horpedahl, Emily Skarbek, and Daniel Smith were this year’s judges. All entries were anonymous. The prize comes with $600 plus three nights accommodations at the Sheraton New Orleans to attend and present at the Southern Economic Association in November. A panel featuring the winning papers will take place on Friday, November 16. The prizes will be presented at the Society’s annual dinner on Saturday November 17.
This year’s winners are:
Colin Harris
Florida State University
“Piracy as a Common Pool Resource: A Case Study of Online Pirate Communities Avoiding Tragedy”
Adam McGoldrick
Queens University Belfast
Patrick Newman
Rutgers University
“The Long Depression of 1873-1879: An Austrian Examination”
In addition to the winners, the judges wish to recognize Emil Vargovic from Central European University with an honorable mention for his essay “The Moral Justification of a Free Market Society: A Hayekian Perspective.” The Prize Committee would like to extend its sincerest thanks to all the entrants.
I'm glad Patrick's work on the long depression was chosen. He's sharp, and that's the kind of empirical work Austrians need.

Is Patrick Newman the guy who posted here when discussing the Long Depression? I really liked those posts.
