This is directed at PhD students and recently minted PhDs who aspire for a career in academia. Summer is a fantastic time to be an academic because you can focus on research projects without significant distractions associated with teaching and/or administration. But it is also a time as a PhD student to make major investments in your human capital outside of the work you are doing in the classroom and with the professors at your school. There are summer programs run by a variety of groups in economics and political economy, I want to suggest the four that are appropriate for either advanced PhD students or junior faculty hoping to refine their knowledge of liberalism, law, institutional analysis, and market processes:
May 2012 --- Beijing Workshop on Institutional Analysis, Ronald Coase Institute
June 2012 --- Scholarship and a Free Society, Institute for Humane Studies
July 2012 --- Henry Manne Program Law Institute for Economists, Law & Economics Center
August 2012 --- Advanced Austrian Economics Seminar, Foundation for Economic Education
I cannot think of a better way for an ambitious aspiring economist to spend this upcoming summer.
I have been to the last one listed, and I cannot recommend it enough!

Yes, for anyone reading this, I would second Dr. Camplin's endorsement. It is very exciting to meet people like Boettke and Horwitz (if you haven't already). But the real treat is listening to Israel Kirzner lecture. He is one monster of a figure, and there is nothing quite like watching a master deliver a lecture on masterful topics.

Yes. Israel Kirzner is the smartest man I have ever met. It's immediately apparent that you're in the presence of one of the greatest minds on earth. Worth it just to meet him.
