The Wall Street Journal has an excellent commentary this morning on the race between Chris Christie and Steve Lonegan for the Republican primary (see also my post from last Saturday). Christie is attacking Lonegan for promoting a flat tax reform.
A tax reform that broadens the base, lowers the rates, and simplifies the system is desirable (even if one believes that loopholes and exemptions are a way to weaken the taxing power of government). Lonegan’s flat tax proposal achieves this. I am sure Christie knows better, but he has chosen to play the political game.
See Eileen Norcross's post at Neighborhood Effects on tax reform in New Jersey.
