Daniel Little, a Professor of Philosophy at University of Michigan-Dearborn, has established an interesting web-based experiment in book writing using a web-site and two blogs. In some sense, this is what Tyler Cowen has done with Marginal Revolution, but Little's experiment is more focused on the topic of social change.
Take some time and explore Little's efforts. I think it will be rewarding even if ultimately you have criticisms of his particular approach to issues.
From my perspective, historical sociology restructured to produce a comparative-historical political economy is how progress will be made. Chris, Pete and I have a paper on this currently under revise and submit at the Cambridge Journal of Economics.
