My colleague Eileen Norcross and I have recently published two op-eds on the fiscal situation of some US States and whether a crisis could be an opportunity to engage in real fiscal discipline. The first one was published in New Jersey main newspaper, The Star Ledger, and the other one in Forbes.
I can only speak for NY, but it looks like Paterson is doing a good job trying to slim down the budget, fighting against the assembly and congress to do so. The SUNY system is going to take some big cuts too, much to the consternation of the Faculty-student associations. Surprisingly though, the student governments are supporting the cuts.

Hey Fred,
The interesting thing about Corzine is that he avers that he is a fiscal conservative!
