Anna Schwartz still goes to work at the NBER at the age of 92. The NBER NY office used to be right above my office at 269 Mercer Street. Ms. Schwartz and I met at a Liberty Fund conference in the early 1990s, and after that I often walked with her to and from the Path Train station on 9th Street to the office discussing economic issues. She has a phenomenally sharp mind and speaks as forcefully and clearly as anyone you will ever meet. This interview has been linked on several blog spots, most notably Greg Mankiw's. But it should be manditory reading for anyone commenting on these issues. The most important point, in my mind, is how different the situation is today than from the early 1930s in terms of monetary policy. The government's justification for the current activism just doesn't meet the historical test.
