The Pew Research Center, which calls itself a “fact tank,” has released today their survey of religious beliefs and practices in the U.S. (see here and here). It is informative and provides plenty of data. The U.S. is a very religious society with a huge diversity of beliefs and views. Here are three findings of note:
While very religious, Americans are not dogmatic about religion. In other words, they are not necessarily certain that their own belief is the unique interpretation of the truth, but rather a good interpretation of the truth.
Nine-in-ten Americans believe in the existence of a personal God or a universal spirit, but there is considerable variation in the nature and certainty of this belief.
Not too surprisingly, Americans who regularly attend worship services and hold traditional religious views are much more likely to hold conservative political views.
