I have been having an ongoing feud with Pete Leeson for many years as to whether GCC or Hillsdale is the best undergraduate college on the planet. Pete just returned from Hillsdale, where he spoke last weekend, as was glowing about Hillsdale.
However, I just learned that GCC was honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for academic as well as athletic excellence. The tennis coach at GCC is the same coach that coached me in college, Coach Joe Walters. This past year he was inducted into the Slippery Rock State University Athletic Hall of Fame for both his playing accomplishments in football and his coaching accomplishments in football and tennis since graduating from Slippery Rock. Coach Walters has one of the best records as a college tennis coach at any level of play in the US. Tennis is one of those sports that is basically a 12 month commitment due to training, individual tournaments as well as team match play. College sports require a lot of travel by bus which is not always the best way to study on the drives to and from matches in throughout the spring season. It takes dedication and time management to keep priorities straight and maintain high grade averages. Congratulations to Coach Walters and to GCC men's tennis team.
