More on media bias. The Fraser Institute in Vancouver published in June 2005 a study of the anti-Americanism bias (called the “garrison mentality”) at the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC). See here and here for the study by Lydia Miljan.
Interestingly, the study argues that Canadians living in the Loyalist heartland and Southern Ontario are most likely to hold a mythical anti-American bias in their mental models. In contrast, people in Newfoundland and Alberta accord little or no significance to what the author calls “emotional” anti-Americanism.
Results for the CBC are similar to what can be found at the BBC (see my post). This would tend to favor the hypothesis that public funding increases the bias against capitalism and markets (assuming US=capitalism). Not surprising. If anyone knows of a general cross-country study done on the subject, I’d be interested to have the reference.
Thanks to my favorite Canadian—who doesn't want to be named—for the information about the Fraser Institute study.
