Yes, Howard had a good point with incentives. But he misses on what the show is attempting to maximize.

I don't watch these type of shows (no, really I don't), but I know people who do watch talent shows. And they watch in order to see the really untalented performers, because the untalented performers can be so bad that it’s funny. The untalented performers are invited on the show because the show is attempting to maximize ratings, not talent. Although, if they really did have a trap door with alligators at the bottom, that could boost ratings, too.
